Abstract
Redundant power supply is a key part of high availability system. In the simplest solution, the two power supplies can utilize diodes to output through or gate to drive the load. In this way, the two power supplies can work together, or one can work and the other can be used as a backup. The field effect transistor (FET) ORing controller is a more practical solution because it avoids diode voltage drop, power loss, and heat loss. Therefore, we can configure novel and economical systems with low voltage loss MOSFETs. Here we will discuss several examples of redundant power configurations for servers.
Redundant power technology for servers
The power bus of a high availability system may be configured with OR or N+1, or both. In general, because of the positive voltage drop and the resulting heat loss, we do not use diodes in low-voltage, high-current applications. Therefore, people are more inclined to adopt FET ORing techniques. However, the highly integrated and discrete design of the MOSFSET controller itself also has many shortcomings.

In Figure 1, the differential voltage VAC at both ends of the MOSFET is monitored by the controller, which sets the gate voltage of the MOSFET according to the VAC. The actual switching point voltage when the MOSFET is on and off, as well as the method and speed of control, determine the performance and stability of the controller to successfully simulate the diode.
The TPS2410 controller is specifically designed for server applications. The load on the server is usually low voltage, relatively stable high current, and does not allow for reverse current to the failed power supply. Below we will discuss some examples of redundant power supply configurations. In the example, the box secondary symbol in Figure 1 is used to represent the schematic diagram of the N-channel MOSFETs and controllers.
