On the afternoon of August 26, 2021, the first Edge Computing Developer Competition (hereinafter referred to as the “Competition”) was officially launched. The competition is co-sponsored by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the Industrial Internet Industry Alliance, and the Edge Computing Industry Alliance. With the theme of “Open and boundary-free at the edge”, the competition aims to accelerate the scale deployment of edge computing, promote the construction of edge computing application ecology, and promote the integration of edge computing and typical scenarios in various vertical industries. The launch ceremony announced the “5G MEC”, “Edge intelligence” and “edge control” three tracks and race questions, and officially opened the registration channel on the official website, and invited experts from the track organizers to interpret the track and race questions in detail.

The launching ceremony of the competition took the form of online live broadcast. Lu Chuncong, Deputy Director of the Information and Communications Administration of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Wu Hequan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chairman of the Technical Steering Committee of the competition, Yu Xiaohui, president of the China Academy of Information and Communications and chairman of the Industrial Internet Industry Alliance, and other leaders attended the launching ceremony and delivered speeches. Lu Chuncong, Deputy Director of the Information and Communication Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, expressed warm congratulations on the launch of the competition in his speech, and stressed that edge computing is an important foundation for the realization of the Internet of everything and a key hub for promoting the collaboration of the edge end of the cloud network. In order to accelerate the industrial development of edge computing technology and promote the ecological prosperity of edge computing applications, Deputy Director Lu Chuncong put forward three suggestions.

First, we will enhance our capacity for technological innovation. Strengthen collaborative innovation in edge computing, and break through key native technologies such as computing power networks and edge intelligence. Encourage cross-field and cross-industry collaboration, and jointly develop a standard system to lay the foundation for the development of edge computing applications.

Second, we will accelerate the cultivation of industrial ecology. Accelerate the R&D and testing of edge controllers, edge gateways, edge servers and other related products, encourage enterprises, universities and other joint construction of edge computing test beds and laboratories, and promote the industrialization of technological innovation results.

Third, deepen application and practice exploration. Give full play to the role of the edge computing developer competition platform, excavate and cultivate excellent application cases of edge computing, form a number of replicable and promotable application paths, and help enterprises improve quality and efficiency

Academician Wu Hequan, chairman of the technical Steering Committee of the competition, pointed out in his speech that edge computing has become an important part of industrial digital transformation and a key supporting technology, and is going deep into various industry segments. This competition will be committed to breaking through the technical bottleneck of edge computing, accelerating the improvement of edge computing industry ecology, and creating a new pattern of China’s edge computing application innovation and development.

Yu Xiaohui, president of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology and chairman of the Industrial Internet Industry Alliance, said that the new generation of ICT technology represented by edge computing is booming, and is gradually becoming the key support for industrial digital transformation, injecting new momentum for high-quality economic development, which has been highly valued by academia and industry. The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology actively grasped the edge computing development window, and jointly held the first edge computing Developer Competition, hoping to build a platform to bring together the strength of all parties, stimulate the innovation vitality of edge computing applications, promote the use of competition, accelerate the scale deployment of edge computing applications, and jointly build a new ecological environment for edge computing technology innovation and industrial development in China.
