Schaeffler’s new mechatronics rear-wheel steering system has been put into mass production on a new generation of all-electric SUVs from a leading automaker, providing the vehicle with better cornering flexibility and superior city road handling. By adding rear-axle steering, Schaeffler’s innovative products improve vehicle handling in urban traffic, improve lane change stability, and make parking easier.
“Schaeffler has evolved from a supplier of components for chassis systems to a complete supplier of steering systems,” says Mardis Zinck, chief executive of Schaeffler’s Automotive Technology division. “Steering systems is a strategic growth area for Schaeffler, and we are constantly improving our capabilities in this area.”
Schaeffler’s new rear-wheel steering system features planetary roller screws, the first of its kind in the world. The planetary roller screw is based on Schaeffler’s precision machinery technology for the industrial sector. The entire system is compact, lightweight, quiet and easy to integrate. This innovative product has been well received by the market since its launch, with the first customer already implementing it in its production models, and more customer models are expected to go into production before the end of 2023 and in 2024.
