The HIMA K9203A analog signal is converted by the ADC into a digital stream
Dacs and ADCs are some of the enabling technologies that have greatly contributed to the digital revolution. For example, consider a typical long-distance phone call. The caller’s voice is converted into an analog electrical microphone, and the analog signal is then converted into a digital stream by an ADC. The digital stream is then split into network packets where it can be sent digital data along with other files, not necessarily audio. Packets are then received at the destination, but each packet may take a completely different route and may not even arrive at the destination in the correct chronological order. The digital voice data is then extracted from the packet and assembled into a digital data stream. The DAC converts this back into an analog electrical signal that drives an audio amplifier, which in turn drives a speaker, and ultimately produces sound.

Top loading CD player and external digital to analog converter.
Most modern audio signals are stored in digital form (such as MP3 and Compact Disc (plural)) and, in order to be heard through speakers, they must be converted to analog signals. Thus, DAC appears in CD players, digital music players, and PC sound cards.
High-end products also have professional stand-alone DAC hi-Fi audio systems. These usually take a compatible digital output cd player or a dedicated transport (basically a CD player without an internal DAC) and convert the signal into an analog signal line-level output, which can then be fed into an amplifier to drive the speaker.
Similar Dtos can be found in digital speakers such as Universal Serial Bus speakers, as well as in sound cards.
