On April 21, 2022, a new version of the installation standard IEC61918/ Revision 1:22nd Revision 1 – “Industrial Communication Networks – Installation of communication networks in industrial sites” has been published. This standard specifies the installation specifications of communication networks in industrial sites. The new version also includes important key points for the single pair Ethernet cabling architecture. This makes it an important foundation for all users looking to bring their production to Industrial Ethernet (IIoT).
IEC61918:2018 / Rev. 1:22nd Rev. 1 is a standard for the installation of communication networks in industrial plants, machines and automated silos. The cabling infrastructure and the components to be used, such as cables and connection technology, are clearly defined by all automation profiles. Consider cabling solutions using optical cables, symmetrical copper cables, and wireless media.
The revised edition of IEC61918 describes a new 1-pair cabling structure for single-pair Ethernet and related remote power supply PoDL (Data line power supply). This closes the gap between classic IT infrastructure and industrial IoT/IIoT. Single pair Ethernet is of great importance to industry and automation. For the first time, it enables the universal application of TCP/ IP-based automation protocols, even over long distances, such as the simple connection of sensors and actuators in process automation down to the industrial field layer. Compared to classic fieldbuses,
This provides users with a clear specification for infrastructure components that are identical and compatible with ISO/IEC 11801-3 (Industrial buildings). Annex 1 (Revision 1) refers to the cable standard for a pair of data cables according to IEC61156-11/12/13/14 and the standard for a pair of data connectors according to IEC 63171-6. This provides a stable basis for system designers and users to select suitable cables and interfaces, and the implementation of single-pair Ethernet technology in the field of automation can officially begin.
The new version of IEC 61918 now provides a clear and explicit normative description of what the sensor-to-cloud data infrastructure for industrial applications should have and what it should look like. The tools to implement the Industrial iot are now available – equipment vendors can now develop and produce single-pair Ethernet devices with international compatibility and investment security.
Whether PROFINET, EtherCAT or other industrial Ethernet protocols – this new IEC 61918 is a common standard for all automation profiles.
