With the development of semiconductor technology, especially microprocessor and microcomputer technology, after the mid-1970s, PLC has been widely used as a central processor, input and output modules and peripheral circuits are also used in the medium, large-scale or even very large scale integrated circuits, then the PLC is no longer a logical judgment function. It also has the functions of data processing, PID regulation and data communication.

Each PLC has a number of dedicated digital inputs for inductive inputs, which are very fast and high-speed in nature. The frequency of this input is so high that ordinary digital input will not be able to sense it. It changes its value 20 times per second (on or off). Therefore, the function of these specialized inputs is to sense these elements. A common digital input like a button or switch has a much lower frequency, which makes it only usable in a common digital PLC input terminal.

Fast inputs are those with a maximum frequency of 5 kHz. This type of PLC generally has 3-4 inputs. Proximity sensors or laser sensors can be defined in this type. To sense such inputs, the counter is used to count the number of pulses received in the assigned fast digital input. This type of counter is called a fast counter.
