HMS Industrial Networks’ Anybus brand recently launched 23 Anybus next-generation gateways that provide faster and more efficient transmission of industrial network data. High-performance gateways connect devices or networks to EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, PROFIBUS, and PROFINET control systems, eliminating isolated automation and improving operational performance.

The new gateway uses the award-winning Anybus NP40 industrial network processor to meet stringent requirements for performance, reliability and security. With new hardware and software, these gateways enable instant data transfer up to 10 times faster than previous gateways. In addition, users can exchange more data, as the gateway transfers up to 1,500 bytes of data between connected PLCS.

How can I streamline the gateway replacement process without causing production downtime or significant reprogramming?

Anybus Gateway’s PROFINET, PROFIBUS, and Modbus TCP Legacy Mode provide innovative solutions to this challenge. As an old Gateway customer, you only need to use the Legacy Mode feature. You can seamlessly switch to the new gateway and get the same experience as the old gateway.

Legacy Mode Principle

Traditional mode enables the web user interface to be activated with the latest firmware version during network configuration. When enabled, the interface and interaction of the new generation gateway will be similar to the previous generation of the Classic Communicator Classic or the X-gateway gateway for PLCS. Note that without modifying the GSDML/GSD file, you can continue to use Anybus addressing mode over Modbus TCP.

Friendly and fast web configuration

This feature greatly speeds up the replacement process and enables you to use a new generation gateway as an alternative. The traditional mode can be used with any Anybus gateway running PROFINET, PROFIBUS, or Modbus TCP. We have introduced some changes in diagnostic capabilities and acyclic data processing to align the previous generation Communicator Classic with the new generation gateway.
