Unconsciously, 5G has been licensed for three years. The industrial Internet is the most important track for 5G commercial use, and more than 70% of 5G application scenarios in the future are in the manufacturing industry. The construction projects of 5G and industrial Internet integration are also increasing year by year, and it can be said that industrial Internet is one of the most active areas of 5G integration application innovation. So, in the past three years, how is the “addition” of 5G and the industrial Internet?

In three years, the state and relevant ministries have successively issued a series of policies to support and promote the integration and innovation of 5G and industrial Internet. Especially since the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology promoted the implementation of the “5G+ Industrial Internet” 512 Project Promotion Plan “in 2019, the level of industry application has been continuously improved, and the application depth has extended to a wider range, deeper degree and higher level.
The latest data show that the total number of “5G+ industrial Internet” projects under construction in the country has exceeded 2,400, the construction of virtual private networks and hybrid private networks has been accelerated, the identification analysis system has covered 29 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, and 192 secondary nodes have been built. In 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released 20 typical application scenarios in 10 key industry areas of “5G+ Industrial Internet”, setting up a number of benchmark models and driving the application of industrial Internet in 45 national economic categories. The application of 5G and industrial Internet integration is gradually extended from the peripheral links of production to the core links of R & D design, production and manufacturing, quality testing, fault operation and maintenance, logistics and transportation, and safety management, and 5G enables the industrial Internet from shallow to deep.
By the end of April, China had built 1.615 million 5G base stations, becoming the first country in the world to build a 5G network based on an independent networking model. Last year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that the 5G base stations applied to the industrial Internet exceeded 32,000, and now this data far exceeds 32,000.
After the commercialization of 5G, 5G technical characteristics can well meet the application needs of wireless networks for industrial digital transformation. After three years of exploration, in fact, the “5G+ industrial Internet” network construction model has gradually become clear. Some industry experts told reporters that at present, most of the domestic “5G+ industrial Internet” projects rely more on telecom operators, but have formed three main network construction modes. First, 5G virtual private network based on public network. The use of 5G slicing technology to form an end-to-end “slice network” for small and medium-sized enterprises. The second is the network construction mode based on user surface sinking. The UPF/MEC can be deployed in large manufacturing enterprises, ports, and coal mines. The UPF/MEC is deployed inside enterprises, ensuring low network latency and data privacy. The third is the resource-exclusive 5G local area private network. 5G private network frequency bands need to be authorized, and industrial enterprises will build their own private networks, and there are few application cases at present. At present, the “5G+ Industrial Internet” network construction model is gradually clear, and the network construction model based on user surface subsidence is the mainstream model, and it has increasingly become the first choice for 5G private networks of industrial enterprises.
