Sustainability-related businesses are the best levers for decarbonisation and climate protection
Siemens makes a significant impact on environmental protection and decarbonisation by applying its technologies and products to customers in pillar industries such as industry, infrastructure, transport and healthcare.
NBRA-659C In fiscal year 2022, Siemens’ portfolio of innovative technologies once again helped customers and partners in key industries around the world significantly reduce their carbon emissions. The products and solutions sold by Siemens in fiscal year 2022 will help customers reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 150 million tons over their lifetime. This figure is 13 times higher than the approximately 12 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions generated by the entire manufacturing process of these products from the extraction of raw materials to delivery to the factory, including upstream of carbon emissions in Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3. Siemens is using a new method to calculate the amount of carbon emissions that all products and solutions sold during the fiscal year help customers reduce over their life cycle. The methodology is based on the principles of the GHG Accounting System Reporting Standard for Scope 3 downstream. Based on this methodology, the amount of CO2 emissions that Siemens helped customers reduce increased from 138 million tons in fiscal year 2021 to 150 million tons in fiscal year 2022.
NBRA-659C In September 2021, Siemens officially launched the “Zero Carbon Pioneer Program” in China, continued to implement energy-saving and emission reduction measures, strengthen lean and digital production, and promote the carbon reduction process of its own operations. In addition, Siemens also strives to help more than 500 key suppliers in China to accelerate the pace of carbon reduction by 2025, helping tens of thousands of customers in dozens of industries to save energy and improve efficiency, and promote the green and low-carbon transformation of industries. By September 2022, Siemens China’s “Zero Carbon Pioneer Program” has successfully landed its first anniversary and achieved fruitful results.
NBRA-659C In terms of their own operations, several Siemens plants have obtained or are applying for national and provincial “green factory” certification. The 18 operating companies are fully connected to the Siemens Global Energy Management System to monitor energy consumption in real time. In addition, the production site of Siemens has achieved 100% reuse and resource treatment of industrial solid waste, and the office and production site have basically realized zero raw waste landfill. At the just-concluded 5th CIIF, Siemens Industrial Automation Products (Chengdu) Co., Ltd. has been awarded the title of “carbon neutral factory”, and the SIMOTICS high-performance permanent magnet synchronous motor produced by Siemens Numerical Control (Nanjing) Co., Ltd. has also become its first “carbon neutral product”. For the supply chain, Siemens China has officially incorporated zero-carbon related indicators into the key NBRA-659C procurement decision-making process, and has established an emission reduction information management system covering nearly 9,000 suppliers in China, targeted to support suppliers to tap carbon reduction potential. For customers, Siemens has helped projects such as Bozhong Seiko, the National Speed Skating Hall and Shanghai Metro Line 18 achieve energy conservation and emission reduction targets. Siemens deploys a customized energy management system for Fujian Benz throughout the plant to achieve intelligent management of energy data. The Siemens Zero Carbon Pioneer truck integrates smart infrastructure innovations and travels through more than 70 cities, empowering more than 5,000 customers and partners. Siemens also worked with partners to build a two-in-one digital empowerment platform project of “Advanced Manufacturing + Low-carbon Park” in Changshu to help Changshu and the Yangtze River Delta region’s industrial digital transformation and sustainable development.
