The ICS T8442 is a Trusted TMR (Triple Modular Redundant) speed monitor manufactured by Rockwell Automation, designed to monitor the shaft speed and acceleration of rotating machinery. Such as steam and gas turbine driven pumps, compressors and generators. The device provides downtime protection against overspeed and overacceleration and is an independent fault-tolerant control system within a Trusted system environment.
The ICS T8442 speed monitor has three monitoring and control groups, each of which provides the required speed monitoring and stop control facilities for a rotating machine. A single T8442 unit is capable of handling up to three turbine trains. Each rotating machine group consists of three independent triple module redundant (TMR) speed input channels and two independent quadruple redundant, fault-tolerant output drive structures.
The device is designed with a speed input channel that interfaces directly with the Trusted T8846 Speed Input Field Terminal Assembly (SIFTA) and can interface directly with three Trusted T8891 Speed Output Field Terminal Assemblies (SOFTA) for shutdown control outputs. The T8442 also features hardware implemented fault tolerance (HIFT) and provides comprehensive automated diagnostic and self-test testing with front panel status leds indicating module health, operating mode, and rotating machine group input/output status.
The ICS T8442 is also TUV certified to the IEC 61508 SIL 3 standard, ensuring high reliability and safety in critical applications. In addition, Rockwell Automation highlights the maintenance and operational safety guidelines that need to be followed during use to ensure the safety of personnel and the correct operation of equipment.
