A tiny silicon robot has made a breakthrough in crawling in a laboratory in Los Angeles, the United States, by relying on the pulse power of living heart muscle tissue. The robot is so small that it is only half the width of a human hair. This is the world’s first robot powered by muscle tissue.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration funded the research. The agency hopes that one day, these tiny, muscle-powered robots will be able to help humans maintain spacecraft in space, making up for tiny meteorites on the hull of space ships

Regardless of where the tiny robot ends up, Carlos Montemagno, the engineer in charge of the research, and his team are surprised that it can achieve a crawling breakthrough. The research team carried out the work at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Montemagono had spent three years developing the robot, which runs on living muscle tissue, but several trials had failed. But when he and his team looked at the final test version under a microscope, they were surprised to see that the tiny robot began to creep forward.
The microrobot is an arched machine made of silicon wafers and is 50 microns wide. The developers installed a bundle of heart tissue fibers on the underside of the arched machine. The contraction and relaxation of this heart tissue causes the arched machine to bend and stretch, which pushes it into a crawl. The muscle tissue is powered by a simple glucose nutrient solution in a petri dish. During the experiment, the tiny robot was placed on a controlled beam. Once the beam was removed, the robot immediately began to crawl forward at a speed of 40 microns per second. The geometry of the microrobot ensures that it can move in one direction, rather than simply tightening and loosening at a single point
