Rotary rheometer is generally composed of measuring head, temperature control system, rotor system and data acquisition and processing system. Rotor system is an important part of rotary rheometer, and the selection of rotor is very important for practical application. The rotors of rotary rheometer can be roughly divided into coaxial cylinder rotor, parallel plate rotor, flat conical plate rotor, blade rotor, disposable rotor and other rotor systems six categories. The following introduces the selection points of several types of rotors for you.
A coaxial cylinder rotor
The coaxial cylinder rotor is composed of an inner cylinder and an outer cylinder, with large contact surface area and high stress sensitivity. It is mainly used for measuring uniform samples of medium and low viscosity and easy to clean. It is generally not suitable for samples of high viscosity, pastes and suspensions containing large particles.
According to different test standards, there are three common types of coaxial cylinder rotors:
The end point coaxial cylinder is easier to be immersed into the sample with higher viscosity and can eliminate the end effect to a certain extent.
When the end concave coaxial cylinder is put into the sample, it is easier to capture the bubbles in the sample, which can effectively eliminate the end effect and improve the accuracy of the test. Variable temperature test is not recommended for this rotor, because when the temperature changes, the bubbles captured on the concave surface at the bottom of the rotor will change with the temperature, thus affecting the test results.
The inner wall and outer wall of the double-slit coaxial cylinder can contact the sample at the same time, which can not only effectively eliminate the end effect, but also increase the contact area with the sample. Compared with the first two kinds of coaxial cylinder rotors, it is more suitable for testing the samples with low viscosity.
Each kind of coaxial cylinder has different sizes to choose from, can be calculated according to the viscosity and modulus calculation formula of the applicable rotor size, or according to the rotor’s own parameter information to choose, generally the lower the viscosity of the sample to be tested, the larger the rotor diameter.
Attention should be paid to the selection of coaxial cylinder rotor:
1. As the sample quantity is sufficient, and a layer of anti-volatilizing liquid can be added on the upper surface of the sample, it is recommended to choose this type of rotor when testing volatile samples;
2, different size of the rotor, the required test sample quantity is different, generally need a few ml to dozens of ml;
3. The rotor needs to be cleaned after the test, which takes different time according to different sample properties;
4. This type of rotor cannot measure the di – normal stress difference.
