According to Xinhua News Agency, China’s integrated circuit industry in recent years sustained rapid development, has become the world’s third largest market only after the United States and Japan.

According to Xu Xiaotian, secretary-general of the China Semiconductor Industry Association, China’s output of integrated circuits reached 9.63 billion pieces last year, up 51.4 percent year on year, ranking first in the world, amid zero growth in the global IC industry. Last year, China imported $26 billion worth of integrated circuits, accounting for more than one third of the world’s total exports.

According to the latest statistics of the Semiconductor Industry Association, there are 651 domestic IC companies (excluding IC equipment and materials companies), employing 115,000 people, an increase of nearly 30% over 1999, among which the number of designers is 16,000, nearly three times that of 1999. In terms of industrial structure, it has formed an industrial pattern consisting of more than 10 chip manufacturing backbone enterprises, more than 20 packaging and testing enterprises and more than 200 IC design companies, including design, manufacturing, packaging and testing industry supporting development. These mainstream enterprises are mainly distributed in the “Yangtze River Delta” area, the Beijing-Tianjin Ring Bohai Bay area and the “Pearl River Delta” area, among which the IC output value of the “Yangtze River Delta” area accounts for 70% of the national total output value.
