The Global Water Awards recognize outstanding achievements in the water and sewage treatment and desalination industries, with an emphasis on innovative technologies
ABB won the Smart Water Project of the Year award for its use of Smart water management technologies to improve the flexibility of Wellington Water’s supply and drainage network, making it better prepared for the future
ABB Smart Water Management technology combines instrumentation and digital solutions to help Wellington Water manage its infrastructure sustainably, economically and safely
At the Global Water Summit held in Berlin, Germany, ABB and Wellington Water of New Zealand won the “Smart Water Project of the Year” award at the 2023 Global Water Awards. With ABB’s solution, Water flow data can be measured and stored in real time, resulting in energy savings of up to 10% per month.
To dramatically improve the flexibility of its drinking water infrastructure, Wellington Water has worked closely with ABB to use ABB smart flowmeters to monitor water flow in real time and ABB converters to further improve energy efficiency, benefiting the local community through cost savings and increased flexibility. In public facilities, the water pump consumes a large amount of energy and is also the equipment with high energy consumption in the water circulation process. ABB intelligent inverter can improve the energy efficiency of the water pump and reduce energy consumption.
At the same time, the built-in verification tool and health check function can help operators ensure the service life of the equipment. Once the data has been recorded, it can also be easily exported for further analysis and evaluation of the data, so that critical factors can be identified earlier and remedial actions can be taken sooner. Wellington Water provides water infrastructure management services to six local councils in New Zealand, including 105 pumping stations, 248 sewerage stations, 148 impoundments and 27 stormwater stations at various locations.
Amina Hamidi, global Leader of ABB’s Measurement and Analytical Instrumentation business line, said: “This award is the ‘Academy Awards’ of the water industry and winning this award is a great endorsement for us. Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, and the Global Water Summit is one of the most important meetings for the international water industry. This award is a full recognition of the hard work and efforts of the ABB team in helping the water industry provide safe and healthy drinking water to communities around the world.”
Paul Winstanley, Wellington Water, said: “This award recognises the successful partnership between Wellington Water and ABB. We are fully aware that effective management requires accurate measurement. This is why ABB’s solution is so important to Wellington Water and our extensive supply and drainage network. With ABB’s technology, we can ensure that every drop of water is accounted for.
