IO-Link is an open sensor communication protocol that represents a powerful standardized (IEC 61131-9) connection technology for point-to-point communications and is independent of fieldbuses and systems. The protocol will also soon be used for functionally safe data exchange.
The advantage of IO-Link is that it simplifies installation (for example, it can use standardized cables to avoid parallel wiring), and it has automatic configuration tools and additional diagnostic options.
In order to enable IO-Link to be used for security-related automation tasks, Pielmagneto, together with other partners in the IO-Link Community, has invested a lot of effort in the development of the corresponding technology, as well as related testing and certification over the past few years.
At the SPS exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany at the end of 2022, a multi-vendor demonstration of IO-Link Safety was held for the first time, and the multiple functions and capabilities of IO-Link Safety were shown to users at the exhibition site.
Not just for safety
The display of IO-Link’s hybrid communication mode is particularly successful, that is, through the same IO-Link device, the exchange of safety-related data and standard-related data, which makes IO-Link Safety extremely powerful. This is why IO-Link Safety is applied to safety drives, safety door locking and control, and signaling devices. This means that the programming of non-safety-related functions can proceed as usual, while only the safety functions are controlled and monitored through the PLC’s fail-safe procedures.
The response to the technology at the SPS show was very positive and through the demonstration, users were able to better understand issues such as the independence of the bus system and the integrity of the system, including the test equipment.
At Hannover MESse 2023, the IO-Link Community further expanded the display area of IO-Link Safety, and at the same time completed some of the necessary testing and safety certification procedures for the launch of new technologies through the relevant notified bodies. IO-Link Safety can already be applied to actual security products.
As a well-known automation technology brand, Pielmagnetic has fully participated in the research and development of IO-Link Safety, and the first products applying IO-Link Safety are about to be put on the market.
