Energy and Emissions Management
Emerson Automation Energy management technology and software provide real-time, accurate detection, monitoring and analysis throughout the production process to help industrial companies reduce leaks, optimize combustion processes and address carbon capture and storage challenges.
The Emerson Ovation™ control system helped Albioma Power make the transition from coal-fired to biomass power generation, reducing emissions by 84 percent, equivalent to about 64 trillion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.
Using Emerson Instrumentation and Control technology, Chevron achieved significant reductions in methane emissions by monitoring and responding to production anomalies in real time, reducing burn volumes by 80 percent and well downtime by 40 percent.
Electrification and grid systems
The International Energy Agency and other industry groups project that electrification could account for 50 percent of the world’s energy mix by 2050, with 90 percent coming from clean energy sources such as wind, solar, hydro and nuclear, which could triple electricity demand. Emerson’s technologies and solutions can play a significant role in this transition, providing low-carbon power for these applications.
One of the keys to net-zero emissions will be the electrification of energy-intensive processes. Emerson is committed to driving the electrification of fossil fuel systems and delivering low-carbon electricity for these applications, enabling an end-to-end energy transition.
A key part of energy electrification is the availability of high-capacity, reliable batteries. Lithium-based batteries are a fast-growing market segment driven by passenger cars, utilities, mass storage of electricity, personal electronics, tools, and other devices. From the mining and refining of lithium and other critical minerals, to the production of high-quality critical battery components such as negative and positive materials, to battery assembly and recycling, Emerson works with users across the entire battery value chain to help accelerate global electrification.
Emerson is supporting German company CMBlu to develop an organic REDOX flow carbon-based battery, a first of its kind that promises to be more efficient, scalable and affordable than existing battery technology.
Emerson Ovation™ automation technology and software support the Texas Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), improving grid stability through visibility of battery operations and simplified system management.
