Recently, the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) released the 2023 World Robotics Report (hereinafter referred to as the Report). According to the report, the number of new industrial robots installed in global factories in 2022 is 553,052, an increase of 5% year-on-year. By region, Asia accounted for 73%, Europe 15%, and the Americas 10%. Marina Bill, president of the International Federation of Robotics, said that the number of new industrial robots installed in 2023 exceeded 500,000 units for the second consecutive year, and the global industrial robot market is expected to grow by 7%, or more than 590,000 units, in 2023.
As the world’s largest market for industrial robots, China installed 290,258 units in 2022, an increase of 5% year-on-year, setting a new record for 2021. Since 2017, robot installations have grown at an average annual rate of 13%. It was followed by Japan, which saw a 9% increase in installations to 50,413 units in 2022, surpassing 2019 levels but not exceeding the historic peak of 55,240 units in 2018. Since 2017, its robot installations have grown at an average annual rate of 2%. It is worth noting that Japan, as the world’s main robot manufacturing country, accounts for 46% of the global robot production.
In Europe, Germany, one of the world’s top five purchasers, saw installations fall 1% to 25,636 units. In the Americas, robot installations in the United States grew 10 percent to 39,576 units in 2022, slightly below the peak of 40,373 units in 2018. Its growth drivers are concentrated in the automotive industry, which will have 14,472 installations in 2022, a growth rate of 47%, and the share of robots deployed in the industry will rebound to 37%; This is followed by the metal and machinery sector and the electrical/electronics sector, with 3,900 and 3,732 installations in 2022, respectively.
