ABB, a global technology leader, won the “Sustainable Development Award” at the 6th China-Switzerland Business Awards (SSBA) held in Beijing on October 26 by the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in China and co-organized by the Swiss Embassy in China and the Chinese Science and Technology Culture Center of the Swiss Federal Government. The award recognizes Swiss companies that have pioneered and achieved excellence in sustainable practices, demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility, social impact and ethical business practices.
Dr. Gu Chunyuan, Chairman of ABB China, said: “We are very honored to win the China-Switzerland Business Award again, which is another high recognition of ABB’s long-term promotion of sustainable development in China. From building a ‘beautiful China’ to focusing on the dual-carbon goal and promoting green transformation, China is moving into a new era of high-quality and sustainable development. ABB’s business focus is highly aligned with the general trend of industrial upgrading and low-carbon development in China. In the future, we will continue to accelerate the pace of innovation and work with our Chinese customers and partners to enable a more sustainable and efficient future.
In China, ABB provides leading automation and electrical solutions to support industries in increasing the share of renewable energy, further advancing electrification, as well as improving energy efficiency, reducing emissions and conserving resources. For example, by the end of 2022, ABB has delivered more than 11 million inverters and high-efficiency motors in China, saving more than 510 billion KWH of electricity, equivalent to reducing about 500 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and saving electricity equivalent to the total electricity consumption of Shanghai in three years. ABB Azipod® Pod Thrusters has delivered around 200 compact thrusters in the 12 years since its Shanghai plant was established, supporting the electrification and green transition of all types of ships.
ABB is leading by example to accelerate the green transformation and sustainable development of its own enterprises. By 2022, ABB China’s total greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations have been reduced by about 92.7 percent compared to 2019, and 88 percent of non-hazardous waste generated in the production process has been recycled. At present, 11 ABB companies have passed the ISO50001 energy management system certification, 5 companies have been awarded the title of “green factory” by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and a number of companies have won the carbon neutral achievement certificate, net zero benchmarking enterprise, zero waste to landfill gold UL certification, green product design or “green supply chain” title.
Yu Chengduo, head of sustainability at ABB China, said that ABB takes sustainability into account in everything it does. While supporting customers, suppliers and its own enterprises to achieve green and low-carbon development, ABB actively performs its corporate social responsibility, promotes local education and talent training, creates a diverse and inclusive work environment, and builds a culture of integrity and transparency throughout the value chain. Committed to promoting social progress.
For example, ABB has donated a total of about 17 million yuan through the “ABB New Great Wall Project for Poor College Students”, benefiting about 5,000 college students from 47 universities in China. ABB Innovation Competition has been held for 18 consecutive years to support the training of local talents, fully training and demonstrating the innovative thinking, professionalism and practical ability of the new generation of young technical talents. At the same time, ABB is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive work environment, continuously increasing the proportion of women in senior management, and adopting a systematic approach to fostering a culture of corporate integrity and compliance.
Established in 2013, the Sino-Swiss Business Awards are held every two years to recognize companies and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Chinese and Swiss enterprises, Swiss foreign trade and Swiss promotion in China. In the five previous China-Switzerland Business Awards, ABB has won two awards: the “Innovation of the Year Award” in 2013, the “Industry 4.0 Innovation and Creativity Award” in 2019, and the “Outstanding Achievement Award for Multinational Enterprises”, and the “Social Responsibility, Diversity and Education Award” in 2021.
