1. The ninth season of the all-Electric Racing World Championship is about to start, and ABB has become the official charging supplier of the event
2. Defending champion Stoffel Vandoorne as ABB FE Promotion Ambassador
3.ABB will continue to launch the “Girls on the Track” video series throughout the ninth season
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship has conducted pre-season testing in Valencia, Spain, the first time ABB has supported the event as an official charging provider.
Twenty-two cars from 11 teams were at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit last week for pre-season testing of the new Generation 3 (Gen3) cars. This advanced all-electric racing car represents a new peak in electric mobility technology, and ABB Fast Charging equipment will charge it throughout the season.
The ABB Formula E World Championship will be further promoted with the addition of reigning world champion Stoffel Vandoorne as an ABB ambassador. Vandoorne started racing in the series in 2018, joining the Mercedes EQ Formula E team, where he secured the eighth season championship with a remarkable haul of one win, eight podiums and 213 points. This year, he joined DS Penske Team in Formula E. The addition of Vandoorne expands ABB FE’s roster of ambassadors, which currently includes Lucas di Grassi (Mahindra Racing), Sebastien Buemi (Vision Virgin Racing) and Simona di silvesto (Tag Heuer Porsche Racing).
Daniela Luzanin, Head of Formula E partnerships at ABB, said: “The new season is very exciting. ABB will continue to push the boundaries of sustainable technology by becoming the official charging supplier for the event. We warmly welcome Stoffel Vandoorne as the new ambassador of ABB FE World Championships to help tell our story together.”
The ABB FE racing charging device is the result of a collaborative effort between ABB and engineers from the two governing bodies of motorsport, the FIA and Formula E. This compact, reliable and safe charging device will charge the third-generation car before and between practice sessions. It features a rugged, customizable and ergonomic design for easy global transport and installation.
Each charging device has a power of up to 160kW and can simultaneously charge two cars at 80kW before the race. This allows teams to benefit from the “two-car charging” feature of the charging unit, significantly reducing the footprint of the charging unit, while also significantly reducing transport emissions as there is no need for a separate charging unit for each car.
As part of its ongoing partnership with the FIA, ABB will also continue its’ Girls on the Track ‘video series this season. Each episode will feature a different woman from the FE community, showcasing the variety of influential roles played by women in motorsport to inspire the next generation.
After pre-season testing, the new season will kick off in Mexico City on January 14 with 16 matches in 11 cities around the world, including the new host cities of Hyderabad, Cape Town, Sao Paulo and Portland.
