• New snow machine for the Audi International Ski Federation World Cup Erta Senior track
• The snowmaking system integrates power data from the ABB Ability™ energy efficiency management cloud platform for real-time optimization
• Reduced energy costs for the ski running company (Funivie San Vigilio di Marebbe SpA)
UTLH21 The famous Erta piste, located in SAN Virgilio Marebe, Italy, is a regular stop for the Audi International Ski Federation World Cup. For this year’s event, the new Sorega High Track runs parallel to the Erta High Track. Due to the need to upgrade the snowmaking system due to the construction of the new pistes, the operator of the pistes (Funivie San Vigilio di Marebe SpA) realized that it was not an opportunity to achieve stable power distribution and energy management at the resort.
The resort engineers worked with snow solutions provider TechnoAlpin and ABB to build a new energy system that ensures artificial snow production throughout the season and provides intelligent remote management.
“When the decision was made to refresh the snowmaking facility with a new, more UTLH21 energy efficient cannon snowmaker, we knew it was imperative to have more advanced power distribution so we could monitor power consumption, manage the plant and optimise energy use,” said Danny Castelongue, technical director at the resort.
The ABB power distribution box UTLH21 System pro E, combined with Emax 2 and Tmax XT circuit breakers, connects ski resorts to the ABB Ability™ energy efficiency management cloud platform. The solution enables real-time remote monitoring of critical system parameters, such as power demand and energy input.
ABB Sales Applications Engineer Paul Ferrari, who is overseeing the project, said: “The ABB Ability™ energy efficiency management cloud platform receives data from ABB’s smart power equipment to monitor key parameters. In this application, energy data is also integrated into TechnoAlpin’s snowmaking equipment, allowing the teams involved to fully manage their snowmaking systems. This helps users optimize their energy use, save costs and improve their environmental footprint.”
Danny, the resort’s technical director, added, “With this new system, this is the first time we UTLH21 have been able to open the SAN Virgilio Ski area on December 1. ABB’s systems monitor energy consumption so we can better manage energy and control costs, which is especially important today.”
Achieving energy savings and increasing efficiency is a challenge for every organization. ABB Ability™ Energy Efficiency Management Cloud platform provides data, monitoring and management tools for power distribution infrastructure across industries to optimize energy use.
