The REF620 unit in the ABB Relion® family is an advanced feeder protection and control device designed for the protection, control, measurement and monitoring of public and industrial power distribution systems. The REF620 device offers a variety of protection features including overcurrent and ground fault protection for neutral ungrounded networks and resistance or impedance neutral grounded networks. The device also has advanced inter-station communication capabilities that support IEC61850 communication standards, including GOOSE messages and setting values based on IEC 61850-8-1, and is compatible with DNP3, IEC 60870-5-103 and Modbus® protocols.
REF620 devices are available in two configurations, single and dual bus configurations, each bus configuration can be paired with one or two circuit breakers and multiple switching devices. The unit also supports a variety of manual and electric isolation switches and ground switches to increase the number of available I/ OS as required by ABB RIO600 remote I/O devices.
The key features of ABB REF620 devices include a wide range of protection and measurement and control functions for incoming or outgoing line protection, a highly sensitive and selective multi-frequency admittance ground protection combination, and advanced, fast short-circuit and ground fault location. In addition, the REF620 offers several optional feature packs for distributed generation, capacitors, basic motors, and arc protection.
The REF620 also supports Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-103 communication protocols and different methods of time synchronization, including the Precision Time Protocol of IEEE 1588 v2. Redundant Ethernet without delay in the event of a communication failure via PRP or HSR protocols provides an optional Ethernet port or ring self-healing RSTP communication for Ethernet-based IEC 61850, Modbus and DNP3 protocols.
ABB REF620 units, with their highly integrated protection, control, monitoring and management functions, provide a compact and versatile solution for public and industrial power distribution systems. Its extensibility and wide range of applications allow users to easily customize and configure applications to meet specific requirements, while the pluggable design for quick installation and testing, coupled with the large LCD screen’s single-line graph display, provides convenient local or remote access.
