With the use of renewable energy, the introduction of artificial intelligence and communication technologies, more “smart” energy is coming to us. In the face of this change, ABB, as a leader and participant, continues to innovate in the fields of electrification, automation and digitalization to find standardized ways to improve energy and operational efficiency, promote industrial transformation, and build a sustainable electrified future.
On June 7, 2023, ABB Electric China President Zhao Yongzhan was invited to attend the 2023 International Standardization (Kirin) Conference held at IEC International Standards Promotion Center in Nanjing, and delivered a keynote speech entitled “Developing Sustainable, Creating a low-carbon Future”. With the theme of “International Standardization helps the transformation of the whole electricity Society”, the conference was jointly organized by the China National Standards Committee (SAC), the German Electrotechnical Commission (DKE) and the British Standards Institute (BSI), and the world’s three major standardization bodies IEC, ISO and ITU provided professional support. The conference aims to create a professional dialogue platform with the participation of international organizations, government agencies, research institutes and business groups.
This conference released the IEC strategic white paper, launched cooperation initiatives, and discussed the existing technology and application scenarios, future technology development trends, international standardization needs and practices in various fields in the context of the all-electric society.
Looking back on ABB’s more than 130 years of innovation history, we have a forward-looking understanding of standardization work and are actively engaged in it. In recent years, ABB has sent experts to actively participate in the development and revision of international standards, such as IEC high voltage switchgear and control equipment standards, IEC low voltage switchgear and control equipment standards, IEC substation network and communication protocol standards; ABB is also actively involved in the work related to the Chinese technical standard 3C, based on local needs.
Zhao Yongzhan, president of ABB Electric China, said that ABB, as a global electrical leader, plays a pivotal role in the process of standard development both internationally and domestically. At present, the breakthrough, cross-border and application of more new technologies continue to promote the update and iteration of industry standards, and also encourage our enterprises to go forward, from “first trial” to “first demonstration”, to help the low-carbon and high-quality development of thousands of industries.
Green product design is an important part of the whole chain of sustainable development, and innovative ecological design can solve 70% of environmental pollution and resource consumption generated during the whole life cycle of products in the design link. ABB actively explores product structure and functional design, selects green and environmentally friendly raw materials, and optimizes resource and environmental issues in all aspects. For example, the VD4 vacuum circuit breaker’s PT environmentally friendly pole, all materials are 100% recyclable; NeoGear low-voltage switchgear adopts a laminated busbar solution widely used in aircraft, automobiles and space stations to reduce space occupancy by up to 25% and reduce heat consumption by 20%. Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) uses dry air to replace the potent greenhouse gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), significantly reducing global warming potential.
As an important fulcrum for industrial upgrading, energy saving, carbon reduction and high-quality development, digital technology plays a key role in promoting the transformation of the whole society. ABB takes green design as the background color of digital development, based on digital twin technology, develops equipment health assessment and diagnosis AI algorithm, intelligent power equipment, continues to explore in modeling, data mapping, visualization, application scenarios and other fields, mining the asset value of equipment and data to build smart power system.
In China, ABB is actively engaged in green transformation, responding to the inherent need for corporate sustainability, deploying sustainability initiatives, and working towards the ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2030. At ABB’s own facilities, through the use of renewable energy power, the use of energy efficiency and building automation management systems, upgrading equipment and production processes, promoting zero waste to landfill and other initiatives to reduce corporate carbon emissions, a number of its companies have been awarded “carbon neutral certification”, “zero waste to landfill certification” and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology “Green Factory” title.
Recently, ABB Xiamen Industrial Center became a “carbon neutral” campus and a demonstration base for sustainable smart manufacturing. The project innovatively applied ABB’s smart energy management and smart energy storage integration solutions, combined with smart building system, i-bus light control system and charging pile, realized the precise regulation of source – network – load – storage, built the smart microgrid of the park, and connected with the virtual power plant platform of Xiamen Power Company, two-way information exchange, and realized the independent and accurate response on the demand side. Promote the development of innovative technologies for cloud edge integrated energy regulation.
Zhao Yongzhan believes that ABB Xiamen Industrial Center “carbon neutral” park demonstration base project scheme and implementation path can provide effective demonstration value for the rapid low-carbon transformation of enterprises. At the same time, in the process of promoting sustainable development, the actual data of the project will also provide reference value for the improvement of the index system of relevant industries.
