ABB Robotics has enhanced its industry-leading logistics automation portfolio with Item Picker, a new picking solution based on artificial intelligence and vision technology that accurately identifies and picks items in complex environments in warehouses and order fulfillment centers.
Daniel Navarro, global Head of ABB’s Robotic Consumer Goods and Services Robotics business unit, said: “The explosive growth of e-commerce, changing consumer needs and global Labour shortages are driving the need for flexible automation solutions to improve the speed and efficiency of order fulfillment and distribution. Our AI-enabled robotic picking solution, Item Picker, can learn and adapt to changing warehouse environments to quickly identify and make intelligent decisions about how to pick items with more than 99.5% accuracy, helping businesses overcome these challenges and build resilience.”
Item Picker uses machine vision and artificial intelligence technology to determine the best grab point for each item, then picks up the item via a suction cup and places it in a designated bin. The system does not require any human supervision, nor does it need to enter physical information about the items to be selected in advance. With its sorting rate of up to 1,400 items per hour, companies can handle more orders without adding staff or extending working hours.
The Item Picker solution includes robots, sucker jigs and proprietary machine vision software to fully automate a range of complex item picking and placing tasks, including bottling, bagging, boxed and all types of plastic packaging, with human flexibility and flexibility.
The Item Picker is suitable for a wide range of loads and applications and can be installed on IRB 1200, IRB 1300 and IRB 2600 robots. With a payload of up to 3 kg and a working range of up to 1.65 meters, the Item Picker is flexible enough to meet the various needs of order fulfillment and sorting.
Thanks to pre-configuration and testing, Item Picker can be easily integrated into existing automated storage and retrieval solutions, such as shuttles, Rubik’s cube storage, and 3D storage solutions, reducing debugging efforts and speeding uptime.
In addition, Item Picker has easy-to-use control applications that seamlessly integrate individual system components and interact with other peripherals, making it easy for customers and partners to add components and other functions. ABB also offers a package of services including service agreements, online training, preventive maintenance and online technical support.
