All Hitachi Energy IGCTs (Integrated Gate Commutator thyristors) are crimp packaged devices. The GTO is forcefully pressed to the radiator, which acts as an electrical contact for the power terminal.
The on/off control unit of the IGCT is an integral part of the assembly. It requires only an external power supply and its control functions are easily accessible via a fiber optic connection. The control power consumption of the device is usually between 10-100 W.
IGCT is optimized for low conduction losses. Its typical on/off frequency is in the 500 Hz range. However, in contrast to the GTO, the upper switching frequency is limited only by the operating heat loss and the heat dissipation capacity of the system. This feature, combined with the device’s fast transition between on/off states, enables short on/off pulse trains with switching frequencies up to 40 kHz.
IGCT requires a on-protection network (essentially inductors) to limit the current rise rate. However, in contrast to the GTO, turning off the protected network is optional. At the cost of a slightly lower turn-off current capability, it is negligible.
